A cherub mid-phrase, violin tucked under the chin, caught in the quiet part of the tune.
Firmin is a small resin cherub playing a violin, finished in distressed white. The bow, the strings and the folds of his robe are all picked out in the moulding, and the white is worn back on the high points so the detail still reads from across a room. Each one is hand-finished, so the wear falls a little differently on every piece.
He is 32cm high, 23cm wide and 18cm deep, and weighs around 2kg, which puts him on a shelf, a mantel or a console rather than the floor. Put him somewhere you pass slowly, a bedside table, a bookshelf at eye level, or beside a lamp on a hall table with the rest of your sculptures.
Why we love it
◆Small enough for a shelf, at 32cm he fits a bookcase or mantel without crowding what sits around him.
◆The violin is legible, the bow, the hands and the scroll are defined rather than blurred, which is unusual at this size.
◆Light at about 2kg, easy to lift when you rearrange a shelf or dust behind him.
◆Distressed white, a soft chalky tone that stays calm against dark timber or painted joinery.

How to style it
Firmin is a detail piece, so give him a little space and something plain behind him.
Stand him on a stack of two or three cloth-bound books to lift him above the rest of a shelf.
Place him at one end of a mantel with a pair of candle holders at the other, leaving the middle clear.
On a console, set him slightly off centre beside a low bowl of greenery rather than dead centre.
Angle him a few degrees towards the room so the violin is visible instead of hidden in profile.
Stylist's TipLight him from the side rather than overhead. A lamp set low and to one side throws shadow into the folds of the robe and lifts the violin out of the figure, where a downlight tends to flatten him.
Care & Keeping
Dust with a soft dry brush, paying attention to the gap between the bow and the strings where a cloth cannot reach. A barely damp cloth handles marks, dried off straight afterwards. Keep him out of direct sun, which will yellow resin over time. No polish and no solvent, the distressed finish sits on the surface and will lift.
Frequently Asked Questions
How big is he really?
32cm tall, 23cm wide and 18cm deep, so roughly the height of a table lamp base.
Is the violin a separate piece?
No. It is moulded as part of the figure, so there is nothing glued on to come loose.
Can he go in a bathroom?
Yes, resin handles humidity. Wipe condensation off rather than leaving it to dry on the surface.
Does he come as a pair?
He is sold singly. He sits well alongside the other cherub figures in the range if you want a group of two or three.
Is he stable enough to leave out?
At around 2kg he is steady on a flat shelf. On a narrow mantel, keep him set back from the edge.
Because Firmin is hand-finished, slight variations in shading and the depth of the distressing are natural and add to the character of each piece. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.

I have never been a clock-watcher, but all that changed with Maude. I can't stop looking at her. Out of the box, slip in an AA battery and on to the wall, just like that! She is simply gorgeous.
This is a present for my horse loving daughter in law. I'm sure it will take pride of place on her mantle piece. Again I love this Web site which I will be visiting often.
Found this beautiful elegant Swan for my garden online via a search at Chateau Living. A great price, quality and excellent ordering and delivery. Would definitely purchase from this business again. They have such a beautiful variety of products.
It was my testing the waters first purchase to check out this new store & what’s on offer. I loved the idea of supplying cast iron cute animal figurines as they’re practical, good looking, solid durable material, great rust finish (no need to buy expensive rust effect paint). Just ready to weather and brings a smile on your dial. I placed my frog with his hands up as if in religious praying gesture next to the concrete funny sign scored at Vinnies reading: grant me patience Lord but hurry - I believe the praying frog and the sign go comically together. I’m thinking of getting the other frog too in its hilarious pose possibly in green patina for contrast. I can confirm it’s heavy cast iron with attractive rust patina. These casts fill the gap in the market dominated by laser cut cortina steel offerings. Just something old school different and complimentary to your garden /house decor. Pleased it’s introduced to Australian market and once for change not made in China… but in France known for its cast iron tradition. We own 18th century French anvil won at an antique auction which is our proud possession so happy to score more in heavy casts.
This may not show on the store website that well but they’re actually old gold colour. It’s lightweight thin metal so perhaps inside or sheltered outdoor space would suit them the best as it may rust out & some fragile parts of the tail break exposed to the weather. They’re as large as described, cleverly designed for packaging - legs are separate with tightening screw. They make an impact due to their size & fit almost any decor with the colour & style.
I was so happy with Chateau Living. Brilliant customer service & speedy delivery. How lucky we are to have an Australian option giving us all these beautiful items for our homes. Highly recommend
I bought this piece as I could see it in my mind's eye having an suspended impact with my high end Brazilian quartz crystal display. Such a well made piece, sturdy and if I didn't know better, from another time. I am planning a candle holder from Chateau Living to complete this display, just having trouble deciding from the elegant range they have available. Very pleased :) Who would have thought you could combine Brazil with French Provincial so perfectly.
