A fairy sitting out on a ball of wildflowers, chin in hand, thinking about something else.
Lady Ophelia is a seated fairy cast in solid iron and finished in a natural rust patina, large butterfly wings open behind her, long hair falling forward, one knee drawn up and her chin resting on her hand. She sits on a sphere moulded all over with wildflowers and grasses. She weighs 5.4 kg, which is the difference between cast iron and the resin and magnesia pieces that copy this shape. The casting carries the veining of the wings, the fall of the hair and every flower head on the ball beneath her.
At 30cm she is the size of a table lamp, small enough to lift with one hand and detailed enough to hold a spot on her own. She is built for outdoor life: the iron is heavy for her size, and the rust patina is a finish rather than a fault, so weather deepens her instead of wearing her out.

How to style it
She is small and full of detail, so put her where people pass close rather than across the lawn.
- Set her on a low wall cap beside a path where you brush past her
- Put her at the front of a bed among low flowering planting, which is what the ball echoes
- Stand her on an outdoor table or a potting bench
- Bring her in to a windowsill or a shelf through winter
- Group her with the rest of our garden sculptures
Stylist's TipNestle the base of the ball into low planting so the moulded flowers run straight into the real ones. It is a small trick and it makes her look as though she grew there.
Care & Keeping
Wipe with a soft dry cloth to lift dust out of the wing veining and between the moulded flowers. The rust patina is a finished surface and needs no sealing. Place a felt pad or a saucer underneath on pale stone or painted timber, and keep harsh chemical cleaners and abrasive pads away from her.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can she live outside all year?
Yes. Iron with a natural rust patina is made for open weather, and rain deepens the colour rather than harming it. On pale stone or decking, set a pad underneath so run off does not mark the surface.
What is she made of?
Solid cast iron throughout, flowered sphere included, finished by hand in a natural rust patina. At 5.4 kg she is many times the weight of the resin fairies sold at this size.
How big is she?
18cm wide, 16cm deep and 30cm tall, at 5.4 kg net. The second photo shows her beside a 30cm wine bottle to scale.
Are the wings fragile?
No. They are cast iron and part of the same piece, not a glued-on addition. They are the strongest part of her.
Will mine look exactly like the photos?
Close. The patina is applied by hand, so the depth and spread of the rust varies from piece to piece, and no two come out quite the same.
Because Lady Ophelia is hand-finished, slight variations in patina, texture, and grain are natural and add to the unique character of each piece. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.
