A wider mantel ledge with a deep acanthus apron, the carving curling outward in symmetrical scrolls beneath a warm fir wood top.
Vanessa is a wall-mounted ledge shelf with a solid fir wood top and a deeply carved MDF apron tucked beneath. The apron features a bold central acanthus motif flanked by curling S-scrolls and curled volute terminals at each end, giving the piece more visual weight than its slim profile suggests. The whole piece is finished in a soft distressed whitewash that wears back to a sandy undertone along the high points, with the timber top left in a warm natural finish for contrast.
At 60 cm wide, 19 cm tall, and 12 cm deep, Vanessa is a touch larger than her companion Jennifer, with deeper, more elaborate carving. The 12 cm depth gives her a slightly more substantial presence on the wall, suiting consoles, sideboards, mantels, and styled hallway walls where a single architectural feature anchors the space.
Why we love it
- ◆ Deep acanthus carving, the central motif and curling scroll terminals read as architectural salvage rather than reproduction
- ◆ 60 cm wide, 12 cm deep, generous display length with a moderate depth that holds candles, vases, and small sculptures without overhang
- ◆ Two-tone material story, distressed whitewash on the carved apron paired with a warm fir wood top, the contrast gives the piece depth
- ◆ Layers with the mantel collection, pair Vanessa with the smaller Jennifer for a staggered-height wall arrangement, or use her solo as a single architectural feature

How to style it
Vanessa's wider top and deeper apron suit a slightly more substantial display:
- Mount her above a console, sideboard, or hall table with a styled grouping of two or three objects, candles, a vase, a small sculpture
- Pair Vanessa with the smaller Jennifer at staggered heights for a layered wall arrangement with contrasting scale
- Use her above a bedroom dresser or vanity with a small candle holder and a single framed photo for a softer architectural moment
- Anchor a hallway with Vanessa above a hall bench, styled with a tall vase of dried stems at one end and a quieter object at the other
Stylist's Tip Vanessa's apron has enough visual weight that the styling on top can stay simple. A pillar candle and a small bird, or a single fluted vase, reads better than a crowded vignette. Let the carved apron do the heavy lifting.
Care & Keeping
Dust gently with a soft dry cloth or a soft-bristle brush, paying attention to the deep scrollwork detail in the apron. The carved apron and timber top can both be wiped with a barely damp cloth and dried immediately. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, and prolonged damp. Indoor use only.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it come with wall fixings?
No, wall fixings are not supplied. Vanessa has mounting points along the back of the shelf and needs appropriate wall fixings for your wall type. Given her width, we recommend at least two fixings spread across the back, mounted into studs where possible, or using hollow wall anchors rated for at least 3 kg per fixing point.
How much weight can the top hold?
The top shelf comfortably holds a styled display of objects up to around 2.5 kg in total spread across the length, candles, framed photos, small sculptures, vases. The 12 cm depth means objects need to be narrower than that to sit safely on the shelf.
How does Vanessa compare to the other mantel shelves?
Vanessa sits in the middle of our mantel range. She's 60 cm wide and 19 cm tall with deep acanthus carving, sized between the smaller Jennifer (54 cm wide, 14 cm tall, lighter carving) and the larger Virginie (54 cm wide, 30 cm tall, substantial scrollwork). Natalie is similar in scale to Vanessa but with pierced openwork carving rather than solid acanthus. All four share the warm fir wood top and distressed whitewash MDF carving.
Is the carving real wood or a composite?
The decorative carved apron is MDF (medium-density fibreboard), hand-finished with a distressed whitewash. The top shelf is solid fir wood with a natural timber finish. MDF takes carved detail beautifully and holds the painted finish well, which is why it's used for ornamental architectural reproductions.
What style of decor does she suit?
French Provincial, French country, English country, traditional, Hamptons, and architectural interiors. The acanthus scrollwork also suits romantic, shabby chic, and modern-vintage spaces where a substantial decorative wall feature is doing the heavy lifting.
Will every piece look exactly like the photos?
Vanessa is hand-finished, so the chip pattern, paint distribution, and timber grain vary slightly from piece to piece. That's part of the appeal and the reason she reads as aged architectural salvage rather than mass-produced.
Because Vanessa is hand-finished, slight variations in patina, texture, and timber grain are natural and add to the unique character of each piece. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.

Lady Ophelia French Provincial Fairy Statue, Natural Rust Cast Iron 30cm
It was my testing the waters first purchase to check out this new store & what’s on offer. I loved the idea of supplying cast iron cute animal figurines as they’re practical, good looking, solid durable material, great rust finish (no need to buy expensive rust effect paint). Just ready to weather and brings a smile on your dial. I placed my frog with his hands up as if in religious praying gesture next to the concrete funny sign scored at Vinnies reading: grant me patience Lord but hurry - I believe the praying frog and the sign go comically together. I’m thinking of getting the other frog too in its hilarious pose possibly in green patina for contrast. I can confirm it’s heavy cast iron with attractive rust patina. These casts fill the gap in the market dominated by laser cut cortina steel offerings. Just something old school different and complimentary to your garden /house decor. Pleased it’s introduced to Australian market and once for change not made in China… but in France known for its cast iron tradition. We own 18th century French anvil won at an antique auction which is our proud possession so happy to score more in heavy casts.
The Frog Prince French Provincial Frog Statue, Natural Rust Cast Iron 30cm
I got this little figurine as a freebie & it’s pretty cute. Heavy cast metal nice detail to it. He would look great in larger sizes too I think.
Mr Capone French Provincial Terrier Statue in a Bowler Hat, Natural Rust Cast Iron 14.5cm
This may not show on the store website that well but they’re actually old gold colour. It’s lightweight thin metal so perhaps inside or sheltered outdoor space would suit them the best as it may rust out & some fragile parts of the tail break exposed to the weather. They’re as large as described, cleverly designed for packaging - legs are separate with tightening screw. They make an impact due to their size & fit almost any decor with the colour & style.

Guido French Provincial Fleur de Lis Urn Vase, Aged Bronze Finish 43.5cm
I bought this piece as I could see it in my mind's eye having an suspended impact with my high end Brazilian quartz crystal display. Such a well made piece, sturdy and if I didn't know better, from another time. I am planning a candle holder from Chateau Living to complete this display, just having trouble deciding from the elegant range they have available. Very pleased :) Who would have thought you could combine Brazil with French Provincial so perfectly.
