DETAILS & SIZE
A 37 cm horse head bust on a turned pedestal base, finished in soft distressed white, the kind of equestrian sculpture a French country library asks for.
Apollon is a tabletop horse head bust sculpted in magnesium oxide composite and finished in a soft distressed whitewash. The pose captures the head and neck mid-turn, with a flowing sculpted mane lifting away from the face and a bridle modelled across the muzzle. The whitewash wears back to a warm undertone along the high points of the mane, ears, and bridle detail, giving the piece an aged-plaster reading rather than a flat finish. The whole bust rises from a turned circular pedestal base.
At 37 cm tall and 25 cm wide, Apollon is sized as a tabletop or mantel statement, a single sculpted piece that holds presence without needing additional decor around it. He belongs in French country libraries, equestrian-themed studies, traditional dressing rooms, and on console tables where a sculptural focal point is called for.
Why we love it
◆Sculpted mid-turn pose, with the flowing mane and angled head capturing movement rather than a static profile
◆Aged-plaster finish, distressed whitewash that wears back to a warm undertone along the high points for genuine sculptural character
◆Turned pedestal base, gives the piece a finished sculptural reading so it sits well on its own without needing to be styled into a vignette
◆Generous 37 cm scale, sized to read as a statement on a console or mantel without being so large it overwhelms the surface

How to style it
Apollon reads strongest as a single sculptural focal point, here are a few placements:
Place on a console or sideboard in an entryway or library, where his pedestal base reads as classical sculpture against the timber
Style on a mantel above a fireplace, paired with a tall framed mirror behind for layered reflection
Set on a dressing-room or bedroom bureau alongside antique books, vintage frames, and a single dried botanical for a French country still-life
Group with our other sculptural pieces on a tablescape, varying heights and palettes for a layered display
Stylist's Tip Sculptural busts read best with a touch of negative space around them, the silhouette is the point. Resist crowding Apollon with too many small accessories, instead pair him with a single tall object (a book stack, a candlestick, a dried branch in a vase) so the horse head reads as the focal element and everything else supports him.
Care & Keeping
Dust gently with a soft dry cloth or a soft-bristle brush, paying attention to the sculpted mane detail where dust collects in the deeper relief. The magnesium oxide composite is porous, so avoid wet cleaning, harsh chemicals, and prolonged damp. Keep away from direct heat sources and humid spaces such as bathrooms. Indoor only.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the base attached to the bust?
Yes, the turned pedestal base is integrated into the sculpture as a single piece, not a separate component. The whole bust including base measures 37 cm tall and 1.8 kg net.
What is magnesium oxide composite?
Magnesium oxide composite (MGO) is a mineral-based casting material commonly used for sculpted decor. It holds fine detail beautifully without warping or splitting, and it chips back to a sandy undertone that gives the aged-plaster effect you see on the whitewashed finish. It is porous, so it needs to be kept indoors and away from damp.
Can I use him outdoors or in a covered patio?
Indoor only. The magnesium oxide composite and whitewashed finish are not weather-rated, and prolonged damp will mark the surface. He is well suited to libraries, studies, dressing rooms, mantels, and enclosed conservatories.
Is he heavy enough to stay put on a console?
Yes, at 1.8 kg net with a wide turned pedestal base, Apollon sits stable on any flat surface. The base footprint is 10 cm wide, which gives him a low centre of gravity and good resistance to knocks.
What style of decor does he suit?
French Provincial, French country, traditional, equestrian-themed studies and libraries, Hamptons, modern country, and warm classical interiors. The aged-plaster finish gives him a versatility most polished sculptures don't have, he sits as comfortably in a refined formal room as in a relaxed country space.
Will every piece look exactly like the photos?
Apollon is hand-finished, so the chip pattern, whitewash distribution, and the worn-through undertone vary slightly from piece to piece. That's part of the appeal and the reason he reads as aged plasterwork rather than mass-produced.
Because Apollon is hand-finished, slight variations in patina, whitewash distribution, and worn-through undertone are natural and add to the unique character of each piece. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.

Pairs Beautifully With
Apollon French Provincial Horse Head Bust, Distressed White Sculpture on Pedestal Base 37cmSale price$87.00
Found this beautiful elegant Swan for my garden online via a search at Chateau Living. A great price, quality and excellent ordering and delivery. Would definitely purchase from this business again. They have such a beautiful variety of products.
It was my testing the waters first purchase to check out this new store & what’s on offer. I loved the idea of supplying cast iron cute animal figurines as they’re practical, good looking, solid durable material, great rust finish (no need to buy expensive rust effect paint). Just ready to weather and brings a smile on your dial. I placed my frog with his hands up as if in religious praying gesture next to the concrete funny sign scored at Vinnies reading: grant me patience Lord but hurry - I believe the praying frog and the sign go comically together. I’m thinking of getting the other frog too in its hilarious pose possibly in green patina for contrast. I can confirm it’s heavy cast iron with attractive rust patina. These casts fill the gap in the market dominated by laser cut cortina steel offerings. Just something old school different and complimentary to your garden /house decor. Pleased it’s introduced to Australian market and once for change not made in China… but in France known for its cast iron tradition. We own 18th century French anvil won at an antique auction which is our proud possession so happy to score more in heavy casts.
This may not show on the store website that well but they’re actually old gold colour. It’s lightweight thin metal so perhaps inside or sheltered outdoor space would suit them the best as it may rust out & some fragile parts of the tail break exposed to the weather. They’re as large as described, cleverly designed for packaging - legs are separate with tightening screw. They make an impact due to their size & fit almost any decor with the colour & style.
I was so happy with Chateau Living. Brilliant customer service & speedy delivery. How lucky we are to have an Australian option giving us all these beautiful items for our homes. Highly recommend
I bought this piece as I could see it in my mind's eye having an suspended impact with my high end Brazilian quartz crystal display. Such a well made piece, sturdy and if I didn't know better, from another time. I am planning a candle holder from Chateau Living to complete this display, just having trouble deciding from the elegant range they have available. Very pleased :) Who would have thought you could combine Brazil with French Provincial so perfectly.

Thank you, Debra. So happy Miss Angelique arrived just as beautiful as you hoped. Lucie
This mirror is beautiful, well worth the money spent. Now I have to add the matching floor mirror to my bedroom😅
The communication with Lucie was impeccable. So refreshing to get a prompt response to an email, thank you.
The only gripe I have is the cost of delivery but I managed to score a discount due to the warehouse move.
I have started a Christmas list of Chateau Living products for my hubby😊
Store owner replied:
Thank you so much, Sandra. So glad you love Serena, and that we could help quickly. Enjoy finding her a floor mirror friend. Lucie
I love everything I have ordered from you guys
The look really suits my decor
Store owner replied:
Corinne, a frog doing a handstand for the grandchildren to find is exactly the job we had in mind for him. Thank you for sharing the photo. Lucie
It’s beautiful
the only things I thought disappointing
Were .. it’s a bit smaller than indicated by 3 cms across the bowl
And it’s pretty much all grey not a rustic patchy colour
It’s still beautiful
Store owner replied:
Thank you so much for the honest review and the photo, Lynne, and I'm so glad you still find her beautiful. The 30cm is measured across the dish including the little bird perched on the rim, so the bowl itself is a few centimetres smaller. We'll make that clearer on the listing. The grey version has a weathered stone finish, chalky on the raised edges and darker in the recesses, so it reads as mostly grey. If you ever fall for the patchier rustic look, the Willowmere also comes in a natural rust finish. Lucie
Store owner replied:
Congratulations on the newly styled lounge room, Kylie. Beatrice was made to be the centre of a room like that. Lucie
Unfortunately the first delivery was damaged in transit even though it was well packaged. Lucie was fantastic and quickly arranged a replacement which arrived in a few days. Thanks Lucie. It looks great in the garden and the grandkids love it. Great company to deal with. Thank you.
Store owner replied:
Thank you, Robert. I'm sorry the first one was damaged on the way to you, and really glad the replacement arrived quickly and safely. Enjoy Farmer Barnaby. Lucie
Perfect in my French kitchen. The mini carrot cake fit well.
