DETAILS & SIZE
She has been down to the coop already and she is not coming back empty handed.
Mrs Cluckington is cast in solid cast iron and finished in a natural rust patina that runs warm amber across her comb and shoulders and deepens to russet in the folds of her skirt. She stands in a long dress that falls to the ground, worked over with large raised flowers, with a soft pouch of eggs carried at her side in one wing and a small pocket on the other. The casting holds the serration of her comb, the feathering down her breast and every petal on the skirt.
At 22cm she is a doorstep and windowsill piece rather than a lawn piece, and she reads best where you pass her closely. She is built for outdoor life: the iron carries enough weight to hold its place, and the rust patina is a finish rather than a fault, so weather deepens her instead of wearing her out.
Why we love it
◆The character, a hen in her good dress carrying a pouch of eggs, which is the sort of thing people stop and pick up
◆The weight, 1.4 kg of cast iron in a 22cm figure, which is what separates her from the resin and magnesia pieces that copy this shape
◆The rust patina, warm amber where light catches her comb, russet down in the folds, and it only improves outdoors
◆The casting, the flowers on the skirt cut in rather than pressed on, and the pouch of eggs modelled separately under her wing

How to style it
Mrs Cluckington is small enough to tuck in and odd enough to be noticed, so put her where someone walks past rather than across a lawn.
Stand her on a kitchen windowsill above the sink where the light crosses her
Set her on a shelf beside the egg basket or the crockery
Stylist's TipStand her where light comes across her from one side rather than straight on. The flowers on the skirt are cut deep enough to throw their own shadow, and that is what makes the casting read as hand-finished.
Care & Keeping
Wipe with a soft dry cloth to lift dust from her comb and the folds of the skirt. The rust patina is a finished surface and needs no sealing. Stand her on a felt pad or a saucer if she is going on pale stone or painted timber, because the rust can mark lighter surfaces after rain, and keep harsh chemical cleaners and abrasive pads away from her.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can she live outside all year?
Yes. She is cast iron finished in natural rust, so weather is what the finish is for. The colour will deepen and vary over the first season and then settle. Stand her on a pad if the surface under her is pale stone or painted timber.
What is she made of?
Solid cast iron, 1.4 kg in a 22cm figure. A resin or magnesia piece of the same size would weigh a fraction of that and would blow over or chip. You feel the difference the moment you pick her up.
How big is she?
22cm tall with a footprint of 8 x 6.5 cm, so roughly three quarters the height of a wine bottle. Small enough for a windowsill or a shelf, not a lawn ornament.
Is she sold on her own?
Yes. She is sold as a single figure. Mr Featherwick, the rooster in the gardening jacket, is listed separately if you want the two of them together.
Will mine look exactly like the photos?
Close, not identical. Each piece is cast and finished by hand, so the rust falls differently across every one and the depth of colour varies. That is the nature of the finish rather than a flaw.
Because Mrs Cluckington is hand-finished, slight variations in patina, texture, and grain are natural and add to the unique character of each piece. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.

Store owner replied:
Corinne, a frog doing a handstand for the grandchildren to find is exactly the job we had in mind for him. Thank you for sharing the photo. Lucie
It’s beautiful
the only things I thought disappointing
Were .. it’s a bit smaller than indicated by 3 cms across the bowl
And it’s pretty much all grey not a rustic patchy colour
It’s still beautiful
Store owner replied:
Thank you so much for the honest review and the photo, Lynne, and I'm so glad you still find her beautiful. The 30cm is measured across the dish including the little bird perched on the rim, so the bowl itself is a few centimetres smaller. We'll make that clearer on the listing. The grey version has a weathered stone finish, chalky on the raised edges and darker in the recesses, so it reads as mostly grey. If you ever fall for the patchier rustic look, the Willowmere also comes in a natural rust finish. Lucie
Store owner replied:
Congratulations on the newly styled lounge room, Kylie. Beatrice was made to be the centre of a room like that. Lucie
Unfortunately the first delivery was damaged in transit even though it was well packaged. Lucie was fantastic and quickly arranged a replacement which arrived in a few days. Thanks Lucie. It looks great in the garden and the grandkids love it. Great company to deal with. Thank you.
Store owner replied:

Thank you, Emma-Jane. Small but mighty, that's Lorenzo. Lucie
Terra cotta and rust are integral to our garden so he fits right in along with all the other treasures that my great grandchildren have so much fun finding.
Store owner replied:
Edith, I love that your great grandchildren go treasure hunting in your garden. The Colonel will be honoured to be one of the finds. Lucie
