Francesca is a candle holder built from fir wood and metal, finished in a distressed white that has been worn back at the edges and corners where a well used piece would show its age. The two materials do different jobs, the timber gives it weight and a base that sits still, the metal gives it the finer lines up top. It is hand-finished, so the wear on each one falls in its own places.
It stands 33.5cm high on a footprint of 13.5cm by 14cm, so it takes up very little of a table and weighs only about 0.7kg. It is made to hold a single pillar candle. That small footprint means it works down the centre of a dining table, on a mantel, or on a hall table beside a bowl. Look through the rest of our candle holders if you want a run of them at different heights.

How to style it
Candle holders look best in odd numbers and mixed heights, so treat Francesca as one voice in a group.
- Run three down the centre of a dining table, spaced far enough apart that dishes can pass between them.
- Sit one at each end of a mantel with something low and green in between.
- Use it on a hall table next to a bowl for keys, where the height gives the arrangement a lift.
- Choose a cream or unbleached candle rather than bright white so it sits with the distressed finish.
Stylist's TipSlip a small glass or metal disc under the candle before you light it. Wax lifts off glass in seconds and it saves you scraping it out of the distressed paint later.
Care & Keeping
Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep it away from curtains, greenery and anything else that can catch. Because Francesca is built partly from fir wood, always let the candle burn out or extinguish it well before the flame reaches the base, and put the holder on a stable, level surface out of reach of children and pets. To clean, dust with a dry soft cloth and lift any wax once it has cooled and hardened rather than scraping at it warm. Wipe with a barely damp cloth if needed, then dry straight away, and avoid solvents and abrasives that would strip the distressed paint.

What kind of candle does it take?
One pillar candle. Candles are not included, so choose a pillar that sits comfortably within the holder rather than overhanging it.
Is it safe to burn a candle in a timber holder?
Yes, with the usual care. Keep it on a level surface, never leave it burning unattended, and stop the burn well before the flame gets close to the base. If you would rather not think about it, an LED pillar gives the same look with no flame.
Will it tip over on a dining table?
It has a base of about 13.5cm by 14cm under a 33.5cm height, so it is stable on a flat surface. On a soft tablecloth or an uneven runner, sit it on a firm coaster or tray.
Can I put it outside for a dinner on the deck?
Bring it out for the evening if you like, then bring it back in. Fir wood and a painted finish will not hold up to weather, dew or a night left outdoors.
How do I get wax out of the holder?
Let it cool fully, then ease it away with your fingers or a blunt plastic edge. Do not use a knife or hot water, both will damage the distressed paint.
Because Francesca is hand-finished, slight variations in the distressing, paint coverage and timber grain are natural and add to the character of each piece. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.

It was my testing the waters first purchase to check out this new store & what’s on offer. I loved the idea of supplying cast iron cute animal figurines as they’re practical, good looking, solid durable material, great rust finish (no need to buy expensive rust effect paint). Just ready to weather and brings a smile on your dial. I placed my frog with his hands up as if in religious praying gesture next to the concrete funny sign scored at Vinnies reading: grant me patience Lord but hurry - I believe the praying frog and the sign go comically together. I’m thinking of getting the other frog too in its hilarious pose possibly in green patina for contrast. I can confirm it’s heavy cast iron with attractive rust patina. These casts fill the gap in the market dominated by laser cut cortina steel offerings. Just something old school different and complimentary to your garden /house decor. Pleased it’s introduced to Australian market and once for change not made in China… but in France known for its cast iron tradition. We own 18th century French anvil won at an antique auction which is our proud possession so happy to score more in heavy casts.

This may not show on the store website that well but they’re actually old gold colour. It’s lightweight thin metal so perhaps inside or sheltered outdoor space would suit them the best as it may rust out & some fragile parts of the tail break exposed to the weather. They’re as large as described, cleverly designed for packaging - legs are separate with tightening screw. They make an impact due to their size & fit almost any decor with the colour & style.
