Sixty centimetres of carved timber, and one is usually enough.
Agnes is a round mandala panel, 60cm across, carved in timber and finished in distressed white. The white is worked over the whole face, gathering in the cut lines and thinning out along the raised edges, so the pattern comes through as shadow rather than as colour. Up close you can still read the grain under the finish.
At 1.8cm deep it is slim for its width, and it weighs about 3kg, so one fixing rated for that will carry it. Sixty centimetres is wide enough to hold a wall without help, which is why Agnes suits a landing, the turn of a stairwell, or the wall you face when you walk in the front door.
Why we love it
◆60cm across, wide enough to sit over a two seater or a queen bedhead without looking undersized
◆Distressed white throughout, so it reads as texture on the wall rather than as a block of colour
◆1.8cm deep at 3kg, slim and easy enough to handle for a piece this wide
◆Hand-finished, the distressing is done piece by piece, so the wear pattern belongs to yours alone

How to style it
Agnes is wide enough to work on its own. Where it earns its place:
On a landing or at the turn of a stairwell, seen from below, where ceiling light drops across the carving.
Centred above a two seater sofa, with the bottom edge about 25cm clear of the back cushions.
On a wide entry wall above a low bench, with a pair of candle holders below it.
As the anchor in a group of wall decor, with smaller pieces stepped down around it.
Stylist's TipMeasure the wall first. Agnes wants at least 20cm of clear wall either side, so look for a run of about a metre. In anything narrower the round shape gets squeezed and starts to look larger than it really is.
Care & Keeping
Dust every few weeks with a soft dry brush, working from the centre outward along the lines of the carving. Keep it clear of open fires and heaters, since dry heat close up will shrink timber over time. If you ever take it down, lay it flat rather than standing it on its edge against a wall.
Frequently Asked Questions
What will hold it on the wall?
A single fixing rated to at least 3kg. On plasterboard use a proper anchor rather than a bare screw. Into a timber stud, a 40mm screw is plenty.
Is 60cm too large above a bed?
Over a queen it is well proportioned, particularly as the only piece on that wall. Over a king it can start to look small on its own, so give it something either side.
Is the white bright or soft?
Soft. It is distressed rather than freshly painted, so it sits closer to a warm off white than a clean brilliant white, and it will not fight with cream or limewashed walls.
Can it go in a covered outdoor area?
It is made for indoors. Even under cover, timber takes up moisture and the finish will lift. For a verandah or courtyard, look at the garden and outdoor range instead.
Does the pattern have a top and a bottom?
A round mandala reads well from most rotations. Lay it on the floor first, turn it until the carving looks balanced to your eye, then hang it that way up.
Because Agnes is hand-finished, slight variations in the distressing, tone and grain are natural and add to the character of each piece. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.

I have never been a clock-watcher, but all that changed with Maude. I can't stop looking at her. Out of the box, slip in an AA battery and on to the wall, just like that! She is simply gorgeous.
This is a present for my horse loving daughter in law. I'm sure it will take pride of place on her mantle piece. Again I love this Web site which I will be visiting often.
Found this beautiful elegant Swan for my garden online via a search at Chateau Living. A great price, quality and excellent ordering and delivery. Would definitely purchase from this business again. They have such a beautiful variety of products.
It was my testing the waters first purchase to check out this new store & what’s on offer. I loved the idea of supplying cast iron cute animal figurines as they’re practical, good looking, solid durable material, great rust finish (no need to buy expensive rust effect paint). Just ready to weather and brings a smile on your dial. I placed my frog with his hands up as if in religious praying gesture next to the concrete funny sign scored at Vinnies reading: grant me patience Lord but hurry - I believe the praying frog and the sign go comically together. I’m thinking of getting the other frog too in its hilarious pose possibly in green patina for contrast. I can confirm it’s heavy cast iron with attractive rust patina. These casts fill the gap in the market dominated by laser cut cortina steel offerings. Just something old school different and complimentary to your garden /house decor. Pleased it’s introduced to Australian market and once for change not made in China… but in France known for its cast iron tradition. We own 18th century French anvil won at an antique auction which is our proud possession so happy to score more in heavy casts.
This may not show on the store website that well but they’re actually old gold colour. It’s lightweight thin metal so perhaps inside or sheltered outdoor space would suit them the best as it may rust out & some fragile parts of the tail break exposed to the weather. They’re as large as described, cleverly designed for packaging - legs are separate with tightening screw. They make an impact due to their size & fit almost any decor with the colour & style.
I was so happy with Chateau Living. Brilliant customer service & speedy delivery. How lucky we are to have an Australian option giving us all these beautiful items for our homes. Highly recommend
I bought this piece as I could see it in my mind's eye having an suspended impact with my high end Brazilian quartz crystal display. Such a well made piece, sturdy and if I didn't know better, from another time. I am planning a candle holder from Chateau Living to complete this display, just having trouble deciding from the elegant range they have available. Very pleased :) Who would have thought you could combine Brazil with French Provincial so perfectly.
