Pip Wren + Styling Guide
The taller of the pair, lifted up on a longer pedestal.
Tiphaine is a footed urn in metal, finished in pale sand with gold catching the raised edges. A pierced lace band set with small medallions runs around the top of the bowl, cut right through so the light comes with it, and the surface below is worked over in a hammered dot texture.
Two ornate scrolled handles rise above the rim, and the whole bowl sits on a tall turned pedestal foot. It is the same design as the 36 cm version, scaled up, with the extra height mostly in the stem.
At 44 cm tall and 39 cm across the handles, this is the one to use when you want a single piece to do the work. It suits a hall console, a hearth, or a courtyard table where it can be seen from across the space. Put it next to the 36 cm version and you have a matched pair at two heights, which is how urns like this were usually set out. More in our vase collection.
Shown in a stone courtyard with eucalyptus and dried stems. Those pieces are for styling only and are not included.
Why we love it
- ◆ Enough height to stand alone at 44 cm, without needing a group around it.
- ◆ A pierced lace band at the rim, so light passes through instead of stopping at the metal.
- ◆ Hammered dot texture across the lower bowl, which keeps the surface from going flat.
- ◆ Pairs with the 36 cm version, same design at two heights.

How to style it
A few ways to use it:
- On its own on a hall console, where the height carries the whole surface
- Beside the 36 cm version, taller one set slightly back
- On a hearth with long dried stems, in place of a fire screen over summer
- On a covered verandah with a trailing fern in a liner
- Empty in front of a mirror, so the cut work shows twice
Stylist's Tip Give it room. At 44 cm with handles out to 39 cm, this one loses its shape the moment you crowd it with frames and candlesticks. One urn, a clear surface and something plain behind it is the whole arrangement.
Care & Keeping
Dust with a soft dry cloth, and a soft brush for the cut work where a cloth will not reach. Do not fill it with water, the pierced band is open right through, so sit a glass or plastic liner inside for fresh stems. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive pads, since the gold highlights sit on the surface and will rub back. If you use it outdoors, keep it under cover and off wet ground.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is it different to the 36 cm one?
Same design, same finish, 8 cm taller and 3.5 cm wider across the handles, with most of the extra height in the pedestal. This one reads as the statement piece, the smaller one sits better on a dining table.
Can I put water or soil in it?
Not directly. The lace band at the top is cut through, so water runs out and soil works its way out of the holes. Use a liner or a pot that sits inside it.
Will it tip over?
The pedestal foot is wide, but it is only 2 kg empty and it is tall, so weight the base with stones or sand under a liner before you load it with heavy stems, and keep it back from the edge of a surface.
Is the gold real gilding?
No, it is a gold-toned finish worked over the raised edges by hand. That is why it sits brighter on the lace and the handles than in the recesses.
Can it live outside?
Under cover, yes, on a verandah or a shaded courtyard. It is iron with an applied finish, so full weather exposure will shorten its life.
Because Tiphaine is finished by hand, the gold highlights and the depth of the sand tone vary a little from piece to piece, so no two are exactly alike. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.
