Pip Wren + Styling Guide
Neck high, wings folded, her back left open for whatever the season brings.
Thérèse is the middle of our three small swan planters, cast in whitewashed magnesia with her neck carried high and her wings folded back along her sides. The hollow back takes a posy, a bunch of dried stems, or a small pot dropped straight in.
What makes her is the feather moulding. Rows of small scalloped feathers run from the shoulder, then break into longer flight feathers along the wing and tail. The whitewash has been rubbed back so the raised edges go almost bone white while the recesses hold a warm grey.
At 27 cm long and 22 cm tall she has real presence on a table without taking the whole surface. She suits a dining centrepiece, a hall console, or a mantel where you want something living rather than another frame. She also sits well beside the bigger garden swans in our planter collection.
Shown here styled with dried grasses, a brass candlestick, antique books and a small gilt frame. Those pieces are for styling only and are not included.
Why we love it
- ◆ A high, drawn neck that gives her a longer line than the smaller swans.
- ◆ Scalloped and flight feathers, two different scales of moulding across the body.
- ◆ An open back, deep enough to hold a small pot rather than just a stem or two.
- ◆ Centrepiece scale at 27 cm, big enough to anchor a table on her own.

How to style it
A few ways to use her:
- Run her down the centre of a dining table with low candles either side
- Fill the back with seasonal stems, wattle in winter, hydrangea in summer
- Sit her on a hall console as the one thing people notice on the way past
- Pair her with the smaller swan so the two necks curve in opposite directions
- Leave her unplanted through the warmer months, she holds her own empty
Stylist's Tip Keep the arrangement low and loose. Anything tall and tight fights the line of her neck, where a few stems falling sideways over the wing lets her stay the subject.
Care & Keeping
Dust with a soft, dry brush, working into the feather detail. There is no drainage hole, so plant into a liner or an inner pot and tip out any water that collects. Magnesia is stone-like and can chip if knocked, so lift her by the body rather than the neck. If you keep her outdoors, choose a covered spot and bring her in through a hard frost or a long wet spell.
Frequently Asked Questions
How big is she?
27 cm from beak to tail, 13 cm across and 22 cm tall. Big enough to work as a centrepiece on her own.
How is she different to the smaller swan?
Same finish and the same family, but longer in the body and higher in the neck, with a deeper cavity in the back. The two look intentional standing together.
Can I plant straight into her?
Better not to. There is no drainage hole, so use a liner or sit a small nursery pot inside, which also lets you change the planting without disturbing her.
What is magnesia?
A moulded magnesium oxide composite. It has the weight and chalky surface of cast stone but is lighter to lift and holds fine detail well.
Can she live outside?
In a covered spot, yes. Keep her out of standing water and bring her under cover through frost, as sitting wet is what wears a magnesia finish over time.
Because Thérèse is finished by hand, the whitewash and tone vary a little from piece to piece, so no two are exactly alike. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.
