Pip Wren + Styling Guide
A classical urn shrunk to tabletop size, chalky and softened at every edge.
Sidonie is a small campana urn, the wide bell shape you see on garden terraces and in old orangeries, cast here at a size that works on a table. The bowl flares out to a moulded rim, drops into a band of gadrooning, then steps down through a turned stem to a square plinth foot.
She is moulded in magnesia with an aged stone finish, a pale greyish cream that is deliberately uneven, darker where water would have pooled and paler on the raised mouldings. The edges are softened rather than crisp, the way real cast stone goes after a few decades outside.
At 19 cm tall and 20.5 cm across she is the right size for a dried arrangement that spreads wider than it stands. She works on a hall table, a mantel, or a dining table where a tall vase would get in the way of conversation. Our larger garden urns take up where she leaves off.
Shown here styled with a dried arrangement, a brass candlestick and a stack of books. Those pieces are for styling only and are not included.
Why we love it
- ◆ A proper classical profile, flared bowl, gadrooned band, turned stem, square plinth.
- ◆ A wide mouth, so an arrangement can spread sideways instead of shooting up.
- ◆ An aged stone finish with uneven tone, darker in the recesses, pale on the mouldings.
- ◆ Tabletop scale at 19 cm, low enough to see over across a dining table.

How to style it
A few ways to use it:
- A loose dried arrangement that spills wider than the rim
- A single trailing plant, ivy or string of pearls, in a pot dropped inside
- Empty on a mantel, where the profile alone carries it
- As a dining centrepiece that nobody has to peer around
- Filled with pine cones or dried citrus through the colder months
Stylist's Tip An urn this shape wants a wide, low arrangement, not a tall one. Think of a hedge rather than a bouquet, and let a few stems break the line of the rim so the shape underneath still reads.
Care & Keeping
Dust with a soft, dry brush, paying attention to the gadrooning where dust settles. There is no drainage hole, so plant into a liner or an inner pot and tip out any water that collects. Magnesia is stone-like and can chip if knocked, and the rim and plinth corners are the most exposed. If you keep it outdoors, choose a covered spot and bring it in through frost or a long wet spell.
Frequently Asked Questions
How big is it?
19 cm tall and 20.5 cm across the rim, so slightly wider than it is high. It is a tabletop piece, not a garden urn.
Is it real stone?
It is moulded magnesia, a magnesium oxide composite. It has the chalky surface and weight of cast stone but is far lighter to lift and shift.
Can I plant into it directly?
Better not to. There is no drainage hole, so use a liner or sit a nursery pot inside, which also lets you swap the planting with the seasons.
Is the uneven colour a fault?
No, it is applied on purpose. A genuinely old stone urn weathers unevenly, darker where water sits and paler on the raised mouldings, and that is what the finish is copying.
Can it live outside?
In a covered spot, yes. Keep it out of standing water and bring it under cover through frost, as sitting wet is what wears a magnesia finish over time.
Because Sidonie is finished by hand, the aged tone varies a little from piece to piece, so no two are exactly alike. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.
