Pip Wren + Styling Guide
The littlest of the swans, settled down with her wings tucked in.
Ondine is the smallest of our swan planters, a compact little bird sitting low with her wings drawn in and her neck curled back over her shoulder. The back is hollow, so she takes a few short stems, a tealight, or a handful of whatever you want to keep near.
She is cast in whitewashed magnesia with a heavily textured body, the feathers worked in small overlapping rows so the surface catches light from every angle. The whitewash sits lightly over a warm sand tone that shows through on the high points.
At 18.5 cm long she is genuinely small, about the size of a teacup and saucer. That makes her useful in the places a bigger piece will not go: a bathroom shelf, a bedside table, the corner of a desk, or in a run of three with the larger swans from our planter collection.
Shown here styled with dried flowers, fresh blooms in a glass jar, a brass candlestick and old books. Those pieces are for styling only and are not included.
Why we love it
- ◆ Small enough to go anywhere, at 18.5 cm long and 18 cm tall.
- ◆ Heavily textured feathers, worked in small overlapping rows across the whole body.
- ◆ A settled, tucked-in pose, softer than the taller swans in the range.
- ◆ Light to move at 0.6 kg, so she is easy to shift around as the room changes.

How to style it
A few ways to use her:
- Tuck a few dried heads in the back and leave her on a bedside table
- Sit a tealight in the cavity so the feather texture throws shadows at night
- Use her on a bathroom shelf for cotton rounds or a small bar of soap
- Line her up with the two larger swans for a stepped group of three
- Give her as a small gift, she is the right size to post and to receive
Stylist's Tip Small pieces disappear on a big surface. Give her something to sit against, a stack of books, a tray edge, the base of a lamp, and she stops looking lost.
Care & Keeping
Dust with a soft, dry brush, working into the feather texture. There is no drainage hole, so plant into a liner rather than straight into the body, and tip out any water that collects. Magnesia is stone-like and can chip if knocked, so take care around the beak and neck, which are the most exposed parts. If you keep her outdoors, choose a covered spot and bring her in through frost or a long wet spell.
Frequently Asked Questions
How small is she, really?
18.5 cm from beak to tail and 18 cm tall, so roughly the footprint of a teacup and saucer. She is a shelf piece, not a floor or garden statement.
What will fit in the back?
Short stems, dried heads, a tealight, or small odds and ends. The cavity is shallow, so a full arrangement is better suited to one of the larger swans.
What is magnesia?
A moulded magnesium oxide composite. It has the weight and chalky surface of cast stone but is lighter to lift and holds fine detail well.
Does she match the bigger swans?
Same family and finish, in a lower, more tucked pose. Standing the three together gives you a stepped run rather than three of the same thing.
Can she live outside?
In a covered spot, yes. Keep her out of standing water and bring her under cover through frost, as sitting wet is what wears a magnesia finish over time.
Because Ondine is finished by hand, the whitewash and tone vary a little from piece to piece, so no two are exactly alike. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.
