Pip Wren + Styling Guide
A garden urn brought indoors, weathered to the colour of old stone.
Ombline is a classical fluted urn, the bowl cut into deep vertical lobes that run from the foot up to a wide, flared rim. The rim itself is finished with a soft scalloped edge, and the whole thing sits on a turned stem above an octagonal plinth.
The finish is a weathered stone, warmer and browner than a plain white urn, mottled so it goes pale across the ridges of the fluting and darker down in the hollows where rain would have run. Up close the surface is chalky and slightly rough, the way cast stone goes after a few winters out.
At 27 cm tall and 28 cm across it has real presence on a table without needing the floor. It holds a generous dried arrangement, which is how it is shown, and it works just as well on a hall table, a mantel, or out on a covered verandah. It is the larger sibling to our 19 cm campana urn, and the two look deliberate standing together. See the rest in our planter collection.
Shown here styled with a large dried arrangement, a brass candlestick and antique books. Those pieces are for styling only and are not included.
Why we love it
- ◆ Deep vertical fluting, which catches light along every ridge.
- ◆ A wide flared rim, so an arrangement can spread out rather than shoot up.
- ◆ A warm weathered tone, browner than a plain white urn and far less stark.
- ◆ Table scale at 27 cm, big enough to anchor a surface on its own.

How to style it
A few ways to use it:
- A full dried arrangement that spills out past the rim on both sides
- A fern or a trailing plant in a liner, on a hall table
- Empty on a mantel, where the fluting and the rim carry it
- On a covered verandah with something green in it through summer
- Beside the smaller 19 cm urn for a stepped pair
Stylist's Tip Build the arrangement wider than the urn, not taller. The flared rim is doing the work, and anything that shoots straight up out of the middle hides the shape you paid for.
Care & Keeping
Dust with a soft, dry brush, working down into the flutes where dust settles. There is no drainage hole, so plant into a liner or an inner pot and tip out any water that collects rather than letting it sit. Magnesia is stone-like and can chip if knocked, and the rim and plinth corners are the most exposed. If you keep it outdoors, choose a covered spot and bring it in through frost or a long wet spell.
Frequently Asked Questions
How big is it?
27 cm tall and 28 cm across the rim, so slightly wider than it is high. That is a table or mantel size rather than a floor urn.
Is it real stone?
It is moulded magnesia, a magnesium oxide composite. It has the chalky surface and the heft of cast stone but is much lighter to lift at 2.3 kg.
Can I plant straight into it?
Better not to. There is no drainage hole, so use a liner or sit a nursery pot inside, which also lets you swap the planting with the seasons.
Is the mottled colour a fault?
No, it is applied on purpose. A real stone urn weathers unevenly, paler on the raised fluting and darker in the hollows, and the finish is copying that.
Can it live outside?
In a covered spot, yes. Keep it out of standing water and bring it under cover through frost, as sitting wet is what wears a magnesia finish over time.
Because Ombline is finished by hand, the weathered tone varies a little from piece to piece, so no two are exactly alike. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.
