Pip Wren + Styling Guide
A timber top resting on a salvaged column capital, acanthus leaves and all.
Hermine is a round table built on a Corinthian capital, the carved head of a classical column, standing on its own stepped plinth. Rows of acanthus leaves curl out and over, volutes scroll at each corner, and the whole base is finished in a chalky antique white rubbed back to grey along the leaf tips and the plinth edges.
The top is fir timber in a warm natural tone, planked and banded with a raised lip around the edge. Left largely plain, it lets the base carry the piece, and the warmth of the timber keeps the white stonework from feeling cold.
At 81 cm across and 78 cm tall it is full dining height, so it works as a small round dining table for two, a centre table in an entrance hall, or a side table beside an armchair where you want something with more presence than a plain pedestal. It is the largest of our Corinthian pieces, bigger than the Alice side table and taller than the Pauline console. The rest are in our furniture collection.
Shown here styled with a stone jug, books, a candle and an urn of olive branches. Those pieces are for styling only and are not included.
Why we love it
- ◆ A real Corinthian capital as the base, acanthus leaves and corner volutes.
- ◆ Warm fir against chalky white, which stops the stonework reading as cold.
- ◆ A pedestal, not four legs, so chairs pull in from any side without obstruction.
- ◆ Full dining height at 78 cm, rather than a low occasional table.

How to style it
A few ways to use it:
- As a centre table in an entrance hall, with one tall arrangement on top
- A round dining table for two in a kitchen with no room for a rectangle
- On a covered verandah, where the white base reads against the timber boards
- Beside an armchair as an oversized lamp table, with books stacked on it
- Alongside the Alice side table, so the capitals repeat at two heights
Stylist's Tip Keep the floor around it clear. The carved base is the reason for the table, and a rug that runs right up under the plinth, or a basket tucked beneath, hides the one thing worth looking at.
Care & Keeping
Wipe the timber top with a soft damp cloth and dry it off, and use coasters under anything wet or hot, as the natural finish will mark. Dust the base with a soft dry brush, which gets into the acanthus carving better than a cloth. The magnesia base is stone-like and can chip if knocked, so take care moving it and lift from the plinth rather than the leaves. If you keep it outdoors, choose a covered spot and bring it in through long wet weather.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many does it seat?
Two comfortably at 81 cm across, and the pedestal base means there are no legs in the way, so chairs can be pulled in anywhere around it.
Does it need assembling?
Yes. It ships flat, with the top packed separately from the base, and the two fix together on arrival.
What is the base made of?
Moulded magnesia, a magnesium oxide composite with the weight and chalky surface of cast stone. It is what holds the fine detail in the acanthus leaves and the volutes.
Is it stable on a pedestal?
Yes. The weight sits low in the plinth and the whole table is 19 kg, most of it in the base, which is what keeps an 81 cm top steady. Check the fixings under the top after assembly.
How does it compare to the Alice side table?
Same capital and the same antique white, considerably larger. Alice is a 47.5 cm side table and this is a full height round table at 78 cm. They look deliberate standing in the same room.
Because Hermine is finished by hand, the antique white and the timber tone vary a little from piece to piece, so no two are exactly alike. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.
