Pip Wren + Styling Guide
A band of pierced lace around the rim, so the light comes through it.
Garance is a wide, shallow footed urn in metal, finished in pale sand with gold catching the raised edges. The top of the bowl is cut as a pierced lace band set with small medallions, so it reads as open rather than solid, and below it the surface is worked over in a hammered dot texture that holds the light differently again.
Two ornate scrolled handles rise above the rim, and the bowl sits on a tall turned pedestal foot. It is a lot of detail for one piece, which is why it works better on its own than in a crowd.
At 36 cm tall and 35.5 cm across the handles, it has real presence on a hall console, a mantel or an outdoor table. The pierced band means anything you put in it shows through from the side, so loose trailing stems suit it better than a tight dome. There is a 44 cm version of the same design if you want the taller one, and the two together give you a matched pair. More in our vase collection.
Shown in a stone courtyard with eucalyptus and dried stems. Those pieces are for styling only and are not included.
Why we love it
- ◆ A pierced lace band at the rim, so light passes through instead of stopping at the metal.
- ◆ Hammered dot texture across the lower bowl, which keeps the surface from going flat.
- ◆ Pale sand with gold on the raised edges, warm without being brassy.
- ◆ Wide and low at 35.5 cm across, so it fills a surface without blocking the view across a table.

How to style it
A few ways to use it:
- As a low centrepiece, since it sits under eye level across a table
- With loose trailing stems that fall over the pierced band
- Beside the 44 cm version for a matched pair at two heights
- On a stone or timber outdoor table under cover, with a potted fern in a liner
- Empty on a mantel, where the cut work reads against the wall behind it
Stylist's Tip Put it where something sits behind it, a mirror, a limewashed wall, a window. The pierced band only earns its keep when there is light or a surface showing through the cut work, and against a dark cluttered background the detail disappears.
Care & Keeping
Dust with a soft dry cloth, and a soft brush for the cut work where a cloth will not reach. Do not fill it with water, the pierced band is open right through, so sit a glass or plastic liner inside for fresh stems. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive pads, since the gold highlights sit on the surface and will rub back. If you use it outdoors, keep it under cover and off wet ground.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put water or soil in it?
Not directly. The lace band at the top is cut through, so water runs out and soil works its way out of the holes. Use a liner or a pot that sits inside it.
How deep is the bowl?
It is wide and shallow rather than deep, so a liner sits low in it. A florist's foam block or a shallow dish works better than a tall vase.
How is it different to the 44 cm one?
Same design and finish, scaled up. The taller one stands 44 cm with a longer pedestal, this one is lower and better suited to a table where you want to see across it.
Is the gold real gilding?
No, it is a gold-toned finish worked over the raised edges by hand. That is why it sits brighter on the lace and the handles than in the recesses.
Can it live outside?
Under cover, yes, on a verandah or a shaded courtyard table. It is iron with an applied finish, so full weather exposure will shorten its life.
Because Garance is finished by hand, the gold highlights and the depth of the sand tone vary a little from piece to piece, so no two are exactly alike. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.
