Two oval baskets with high arched handles, pierced like old lace.
Fontaine is a pair of oval basket trays, one larger and one smaller, each with a tall handle arching right over the middle and finishing in a tight scroll where it meets the rim. The bases are pierced in a lace pattern, a dense field of small cut openings worked into a rosette at the centre.
The finish shifts between antique gold and verdigris, brighter and warmer along the handle and the rim where a real tray would have been held, cooler and greener down in the piercing. The two tones make the piercework read properly instead of flattening out.
The larger measures 45 cm long and 29 cm to the top of the handle, the smaller 40 cm and 27 cm. They nest, so they store as one, and they carry things rather than just hold them. Worth seeing next to the rest of our trays and bowls.

How to style it
A few ways to use them:
- Pillar candles in the larger one, so the piercing throws light across the table
- Bread, fruit or cheese for a table, with a cloth or board laid in first
- Potted herbs carried out to the table and back again
- The smaller one on a dresser for keys, post and the things that collect
- Both nested on a sideboard, where the two handles make an arch
Stylist's Tip Put a light behind the piercing rather than above it. A candle sitting inside the tray, or a lamp to one side, is what turns the cut pattern into shadow on the surface underneath.
Care & Keeping
Dust with a soft, dry brush, which gets into the piercing far better than a cloth. These are decorative rather than food-safe, so lay a cloth, a board or a plate in the base before you put food on them. Do not soak or put them in a dishwasher, as water sitting in the cut edges will mark the finish. Keep them indoors and dry.

How many do I get?
Two, a larger and a smaller, both included. The larger is 45 cm long and the smaller 40 cm.
Can I serve food on them?
Lay a cloth, a board or a plate in the base first. They are decorative pieces rather than food-safe serving ware, and the base is pierced, so small things fall through anyway.
Will the handle take the weight?
The handle is fixed to the rim at both sides and will carry a normal tray load. Lift from underneath as well if you are moving something heavy or breakable.
Do they nest?
Yes. The smaller sits inside the larger, so the pair stores in about the space of one.
Is the green colour meant to be there?
Yes. The verdigris sits down in the piercing and the recesses on purpose, under a warmer antique gold on the raised surfaces. It is what gives the piercework its depth.
Because Fontaine is finished by hand, the gold and verdigris vary a little from piece to piece, so no two are exactly alike. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.

It was my testing the waters first purchase to check out this new store & what’s on offer. I loved the idea of supplying cast iron cute animal figurines as they’re practical, good looking, solid durable material, great rust finish (no need to buy expensive rust effect paint). Just ready to weather and brings a smile on your dial. I placed my frog with his hands up as if in religious praying gesture next to the concrete funny sign scored at Vinnies reading: grant me patience Lord but hurry - I believe the praying frog and the sign go comically together. I’m thinking of getting the other frog too in its hilarious pose possibly in green patina for contrast. I can confirm it’s heavy cast iron with attractive rust patina. These casts fill the gap in the market dominated by laser cut cortina steel offerings. Just something old school different and complimentary to your garden /house decor. Pleased it’s introduced to Australian market and once for change not made in China… but in France known for its cast iron tradition. We own 18th century French anvil won at an antique auction which is our proud possession so happy to score more in heavy casts.

This may not show on the store website that well but they’re actually old gold colour. It’s lightweight thin metal so perhaps inside or sheltered outdoor space would suit them the best as it may rust out & some fragile parts of the tail break exposed to the weather. They’re as large as described, cleverly designed for packaging - legs are separate with tightening screw. They make an impact due to their size & fit almost any decor with the colour & style.
