Big, plain and weathered, like something lifted off an old terrace.
Chantilly is a generous goblet urn, a deep round bowl raised on a turned stem and a wide stepped foot. A single band of lobed ornament wraps the lower bowl, and above it the sides rise clean to a plain rolled rim. There is nothing fussy about it, which is why it works.
The finish is a weathered stone colour, a warm greyish sand laid on unevenly so it goes paler on the rim and the lobes and darker where the shape turns in. It reads as old cast stone, though it is metal underneath and far lighter than it looks.
At 35 cm tall and 35.5 cm across it is a proper floor or hearth piece, not a tabletop one. Stand it beside a fireplace, inside a front door, at the end of a hallway, or out on a covered verandah with a fern in it. Our taller pedestal planters work alongside it.

How to style it
A few ways to use it:
- A fern or a trailing plant in a liner, set beside a fireplace
- Tall dried branches, which the wide bowl is heavy enough to balance
- On a covered verandah, one either side of a doorway
- Empty in a hallway corner, where the silhouette does the work
- Filled with pine cones, dried hydrangea or logs through winter
Stylist's Tip It is light, so anything tall in it will want to tip. Put a brick, a bag of sand or a heavy pot in the base before you plant, and it will stand up to a doorway draught.
Care & Keeping
Wipe with a soft, dry cloth, and brush dust out of the lobed band. There is no drainage hole, so plant into a liner or an inner pot and tip out any water that collects rather than letting it sit. If you keep it outdoors, choose a covered spot off open ground and bring it in through a long wet spell. The weathered finish is intended and will mellow further with time.

Is it heavy?
No, and that surprises people. It is 1.17 kg empty, because it is metal rather than solid stone. Weigh the base down if you are planting something tall in it.
Is it real stone?
No, it is iron with a weathered stone-look finish. From a step back it reads as cast stone, but it will take a knock that would chip the real thing.
Can I plant straight into it?
Better not to. There is no drainage hole, so use a liner or sit a nursery pot inside, which also lets you swap the planting without repotting.
Can it live outside?
In a covered spot, yes, such as a verandah or a sheltered porch. Keep it out of standing water and off wet ground, as that is what shortens the life of the finish.
Because Chantilly is finished by hand, the weathering and tone vary a little from piece to piece, so no two are exactly alike. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.

It was my testing the waters first purchase to check out this new store & what’s on offer. I loved the idea of supplying cast iron cute animal figurines as they’re practical, good looking, solid durable material, great rust finish (no need to buy expensive rust effect paint). Just ready to weather and brings a smile on your dial. I placed my frog with his hands up as if in religious praying gesture next to the concrete funny sign scored at Vinnies reading: grant me patience Lord but hurry - I believe the praying frog and the sign go comically together. I’m thinking of getting the other frog too in its hilarious pose possibly in green patina for contrast. I can confirm it’s heavy cast iron with attractive rust patina. These casts fill the gap in the market dominated by laser cut cortina steel offerings. Just something old school different and complimentary to your garden /house decor. Pleased it’s introduced to Australian market and once for change not made in China… but in France known for its cast iron tradition. We own 18th century French anvil won at an antique auction which is our proud possession so happy to score more in heavy casts.

This may not show on the store website that well but they’re actually old gold colour. It’s lightweight thin metal so perhaps inside or sheltered outdoor space would suit them the best as it may rust out & some fragile parts of the tail break exposed to the weather. They’re as large as described, cleverly designed for packaging - legs are separate with tightening screw. They make an impact due to their size & fit almost any decor with the colour & style.
