A small swan with her back open to the light, waiting to be filled.
Babette is a swan planter in whitewashed magnesia, her neck drawn up in a long curve and her body moulded with row upon row of layered feathers. The back is open, so she holds a small arrangement, a posy of dried stems, or a little pot dropped straight in.
The finish is a chalky whitewash rubbed back over a warm grey-clay body, so the raised feather tips catch the light while the recesses stay soft and shadowed. She reads as something found rather than bought.
At 23 cm long she is a tabletop size, not a garden statement. She sits comfortably on a console, a dresser, a windowsill or a bedside table, and she is the smallest but one of our swans, so she groups well with the larger birds in the range.
Shown here styled with dried stems, a candlestick, old books and a small framed picture. Those pieces are for styling only and are not included.
Why we love it
◆An open back, so she works as a planter, a vase or a small catch-all.
◆Deep moulded feathers, layered from the shoulder down to the tail.
◆A chalky whitewash rubbed back over a warm clay body for an aged look.
◆Tabletop scale at 23 cm, small enough for a shelf or a bedside.

How to style it
A few ways to use her:
Fill the back with dried stems, letting them spill over the tail
Drop a small nursery pot inside and swap the planting with the seasons
Leave her empty on a shelf, where the feather detail does the work on its own
Group her with the larger swans for a run of three at different heights
Use her as a dressing table catch-all for rings and small things
Stylist's Tip
Turn her so the neck curves away from the room rather than into it. A swan reads best in profile, and the long line of the neck is the whole point of the piece.
Care & Keeping
Dust with a soft, dry brush, working into the feather detail. There is no drainage hole, so plant into a liner or an inner pot rather than straight into the body, and tip out any water that collects. Magnesia is stone-like and can chip if knocked, so set her down gently. If you keep her outdoors, choose a covered spot and bring her in through a hard frost or a long wet spell.
Frequently Asked Questions
How big is she?
23 cm from beak to tail, 12 cm across and 22.5 cm tall. That is a tabletop size, about as tall as a wine bottle is to the shoulder.
Can I plant straight into her?
Better not to. There is no drainage hole, so use a liner or sit a small nursery pot inside. That also lets you change the planting without disturbing her.
What is magnesia?
A moulded magnesium oxide composite. It has the weight and chalky surface of cast stone but is lighter to lift and takes fine detail well.
Does she match your other swans?
She is from the same family and the same whitewashed finish, in a smaller size. Grouped together the different heights look deliberate rather than mismatched.
Can she live outside?
In a covered spot, yes. Keep her off open ground in heavy rain and bring her under cover through frost, as standing water is what damages a magnesia finish over time.
Because Babette is finished by hand, the whitewash and tone vary a little from piece to piece, so no two are exactly alike. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.

I enjoyed reading the Chateau Styling Guide very much. I appreciate the collection of beautiful pieces Lucie has made available to her clients. And I agree with the idea that one should never ‘rush’ to complete a room or your home. It is so satisfying to finally find that one special piece you know will add to the look of your home. Thank you so much for this booklet. It will be a great resource to refer to.
I have never been a clock-watcher, but all that changed with Maude. I can't stop looking at her. Out of the box, slip in an AA battery and on to the wall, just like that! She is simply gorgeous.
This is a present for my horse loving daughter in law. I'm sure it will take pride of place on her mantle piece. Again I love this Web site which I will be visiting often.
Found this beautiful elegant Swan for my garden online via a search at Chateau Living. A great price, quality and excellent ordering and delivery. Would definitely purchase from this business again. They have such a beautiful variety of products.
It was my testing the waters first purchase to check out this new store & what’s on offer. I loved the idea of supplying cast iron cute animal figurines as they’re practical, good looking, solid durable material, great rust finish (no need to buy expensive rust effect paint). Just ready to weather and brings a smile on your dial. I placed my frog with his hands up as if in religious praying gesture next to the concrete funny sign scored at Vinnies reading: grant me patience Lord but hurry - I believe the praying frog and the sign go comically together. I’m thinking of getting the other frog too in its hilarious pose possibly in green patina for contrast. I can confirm it’s heavy cast iron with attractive rust patina. These casts fill the gap in the market dominated by laser cut cortina steel offerings. Just something old school different and complimentary to your garden /house decor. Pleased it’s introduced to Australian market and once for change not made in China… but in France known for its cast iron tradition. We own 18th century French anvil won at an antique auction which is our proud possession so happy to score more in heavy casts.
This may not show on the store website that well but they’re actually old gold colour. It’s lightweight thin metal so perhaps inside or sheltered outdoor space would suit them the best as it may rust out & some fragile parts of the tail break exposed to the weather. They’re as large as described, cleverly designed for packaging - legs are separate with tightening screw. They make an impact due to their size & fit almost any decor with the colour & style.
I was so happy with Chateau Living. Brilliant customer service & speedy delivery. How lucky we are to have an Australian option giving us all these beautiful items for our homes. Highly recommend
