A flower pressed into metal, softened by a century of imagined wear.
Austin is a panel of embossed metal with a floral motif raised out of the surface, so the pattern sits proud of the background and picks up shadow as the light moves across it. The border is finished in distressed black and the interior in distressed white, a pairing that keeps the piece graphic without feeling heavy. Every panel is hand-finished, so the rubbed-back edges fall a little differently on each one.
It stands 61.3cm tall and 41.5cm wide, with only 2.7cm of depth, which makes it an easy choice for a hallway or a narrow wall beside a doorway where a deeper piece would be in the way. At around 1.5kg it hangs from a single fixing into a stud or a rated wall anchor. Use it on its own above a console, or group it with other wall decor for a gathered arrangement.
Why we love it
- ◆Real relief, not a print, the floral design is embossed into the metal so it holds genuine texture and shadow.
- ◆Two-tone finish, distressed white inside a distressed black frame, which reads well against both pale and darker walls.
- ◆Light on the wall, 1.5kg and 2.7cm deep, so it suits plasterboard and tight passageways.
- ◆Hand-finished, the distressing is applied by hand, so no two panels wear in quite the same places.
Dimensions & Details
| Height | 61.3cm |
| Width | 41.5cm |
| Depth | 2.7cm |
| Weight | Approx. 1.5kg |
| Materials | Metal |
| Finish | Distressed white interior with a distressed black frame |
| Hanging | Wall mounted, sits flat against the wall |
| Style | French provincial, country farmhouse |
| Suitable for | Indoor use. The painted metal finish is not made for rain, so keep it out of the weather |
How to style it
Austin is a portrait shape, so it works best where the wall is taller than it is wide.
- Hang it in a hallway at eye level, roughly 145cm from the floor to the centre of the panel.
- Place it above a narrow console with a lamp to one side so the light rakes across the embossing.
- Pair two of them either side of a doorway or a window for a symmetrical look.
- Set it against a deeper wall colour, sage or charcoal, to let the distressed white come forward.
Stylist's TipHang it where a lamp or a window sits off to one side rather than straight on. Side light is what makes embossed metal read as relief instead of a flat panel.
Care & Keeping
Dust with a dry, soft cloth, or lift dust out of the deeper parts of the pattern with a clean, soft paintbrush. If the surface needs more, wipe it with a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away. Skip household sprays, solvents and anything abrasive, as they will strip the distressed paint. Keep it away from steam and damp rooms so the metal stays sound.
Frequently Asked Questions
How heavy is it, and will plasterboard hold it?
It weighs about 1.5kg. That is well within the range of a rated plasterboard anchor, though fixing into a stud is always the surer option.
Is the pattern printed on or actually raised?
Raised. The floral design is embossed into the metal, so you can feel the relief with your hand and it casts a real shadow.
Can it go outside on a verandah?
We list it as indoor. The painted metal is not weather sealed, so rain and sea air will lift the finish and start rust. If you want it under a well covered verandah, keep it fully out of splash and salt air, and understand the finish will age faster there.
How far does it stand off the wall?
Just 2.7cm, so it sits close and flat. That is part of why it works in hallways and behind doors where a deeper piece would catch.
Will it match the Rosalind panel?
They sit in the same family of embossed floral metal, though Rosalind is larger and finished in distressed white without the black frame. Hung on the same wall they read as a considered pair rather than a matched set.
Because Austin is hand-finished, slight variations in the distressing, paint coverage and depth of the embossing are natural and add to the character of each piece. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.

It’s beautiful the only things I thought disappointing Were .. it’s a bit smaller than indicated by 3 cms across the bowl And it’s pretty much all grey not a rustic patchy colour It’s still beautiful
The Willowmere Grey French Provincial Pedestal Bird Feeder, Weathered Grey Cast Iron 58cm
Store owner replied: Thank you so much for the honest review and the photo, Lynne, and I'm so glad you still find her beautiful. The 30cm is measured across the dish including the little bird perched on the rim, so the bowl itself is a few centimetres smaller. We'll make that clearer on the listing. The grey version has a weathered stone finish, chalky on the raised edges and darker in the recesses, so it reads as mostly grey. If you ever fall for the patchier rustic look, the Willowmere also comes in a natural rust finish. Lucie
