Pip Wren + Styling Guide
A footed bowl with two scrolled handles, worn back to the grey beneath.
Clotilde is a footed compote urn, a shallow bowl lifted on a turned pedestal with a scrolled handle curling out from each side. An embossed band of small repeating ornament runs right around the bowl just under the rim, which is where the light catches first.
The finish is a distressed white over a cool grey base, rubbed through along the rim, the handle scrolls and the foot. It is laid on unevenly on purpose, so the piece looks like it has been repainted once or twice over a long life rather than finished yesterday.
At 22 cm tall and 28 cm across the handles, the wide shallow bowl suits an arrangement that sits low and spreads out. A handful of garden flowers looks right in it, and so does nothing at all. There are more urns and planters in the same spirit if you want a set.
Shown here styled with fresh garden flowers, a small lidded pot, antique books and a gilt trinket box. Those pieces are for styling only and are not included.
Why we love it
- ◆ Two scrolled handles that give the shape width without adding height.
- ◆ An embossed band of fine repeating ornament around the bowl.
- ◆ Distressed white over grey, worn through where a real piece would have rubbed.
- ◆ A low, wide bowl, which makes a small bunch of flowers go further.

How to style it
A few ways to use it:
- A low posy of garden flowers, cut short so the bowl still shows
- A trailing plant in a liner, left to spill over one handle
- Fruit on a kitchen bench, which is what a compote was for in the first place
- Empty on a shelf, turned so one handle breaks the line of the edge
- Two together down a long table, with candles between them
Stylist's Tip The handles are the best part of this shape, so do not bury them. Keep the arrangement inside the width of the bowl and let the scrolls stand clear on both sides.
Care & Keeping
Wipe with a soft, dry cloth, and use a dry brush to get dust out of the embossed band. For fresh flowers, sit a liner inside rather than filling the bowl directly, and dry the outside if any water runs down. The worn finish is intended and will keep softening gently with handling. Keep it indoors and out of damp.
Frequently Asked Questions
How big is it?
22 cm tall and 28 cm across including both handles, 19.5 cm front to back. Wider than it is tall, which is what gives it the low classical look.
Can I put water in it?
Use a liner. We do not guarantee it watertight, and standing water inside a metal bowl causes trouble over time. A shallow dish or a florist's liner sits inside out of sight.
Can I use it for fruit?
Yes, with a cloth or a liner under the fruit. It is a decorative piece rather than a food-safe serving bowl, so keep anything you plan to eat off the surface itself.
Is the worn paint a fault?
No. The white is rubbed back to the grey underneath on purpose, along the rim, the handles and the foot, which is exactly where an old painted piece would have worn.
Can it go outside?
It is made for indoor use. The painted finish on iron is not suited to weather, so keep it inside and dry.
Because Clotilde is finished by hand, the distressing and tone vary a little from piece to piece, so no two are exactly alike. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.
