The head and neck of a horse, held mid-turn, in a chalky worn white.
Aurelius is a horse head sculpture cast in magnesia and finished in distressed white. Magnesia is a cement based composite, denser and cooler to the touch than resin, and it takes a worn-back white finish well. The mane, the line of the jaw and the flare of the nostril are all defined, and because the piece is hand-finished the distressing falls differently on each one.
He stands 60.5cm high on a plinth 41cm wide and 20.5cm deep, and weighs about 5kg. At that height he reads as a console or floor piece rather than a shelf ornament. A hall table, the end of a sideboard, or the floor beside a fireplace all suit him, and he holds his own beside taller mirrors.
Why we love it
- ◆Magnesia, not resin, a cement composite that feels solid in the hand and copes with a covered outdoor spot.
- ◆Real height at 60.5cm, tall enough to carry a console or an entry on its own without other pieces around it.
- ◆Plinth is part of the casting, so he stands square on a flat surface with no separate base to source.
- ◆Stylised rather than literal, the modelling is pared back, which keeps an equestrian subject from tipping into novelty.

How to style it
Aurelius is tall and narrow, so he fills vertical space that a bowl or a stack of books never will.
- Set him on a hall console in front of a mirror so the profile is doubled behind him.
- Stand him on the floor beside a fireplace, turned slightly towards the room rather than square on.
- Group him with one low object only, a shallow tray or a single candle, so nothing competes at his height.
- On a covered verandah, place him at the end of a bench where the roofline still covers him.
Stylist's TipTurn him three quarters on rather than straight ahead. A horse head is strongest in profile, and a slight turn keeps the near ear and the far cheek both visible so he does not flatten into a cut-out.
Care & Keeping
Magnesia is porous, so keep him out of standing water and off wet surfaces where moisture can wick up through the base. Dust with a dry brush, and use a barely damp cloth for marks, drying straight afterwards. If he lives on a covered verandah, bring him in ahead of a storm and check the base for grit before setting him back on furniture. No bleach and no bathroom cleaners on the white.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is magnesia?
A cement based composite. It is denser than resin, holds fine detail well and has a cool stone-like feel, which is why it is used for statuary.
Can he stay outdoors?
In a covered position, yes. Magnesia tolerates a verandah or porch. It is porous, so avoid leaving him in constant rain or standing water.
Does he need assembling?
No. He is cast as a single piece including the plinth, and weighs around 5kg before packaging.
Will he mark a polished console?
The cast base is flat but slightly textured. Check it for grit and sit him on a felt pad if the surface underneath is polished timber.
What else works with him?
The distressed white runs right through our sculptures, so he pairs with the cherub and angel pieces without clashing.
Because Aurelius is hand-finished, slight variations in shading and the depth of the distressing are natural and add to the character of each piece. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.
