A small cherub sitting with legs stretched out, head tilted up, caught mid-daydream.
Bastien sits with his legs stretched out in front of him, hands resting at his sides, head turned and lifted as if listening to something just out of view. He's cast in magnesium oxide composite with a distressed whitewash finish that wears back to a soft sandy undertone across the hair, wings, and the planes of his face. The chip pattern reads as aged stone, not new resin.
At 17 cm tall and 13 cm wide, Bastien is the smaller of our cherub pair, designed to be set alongside our larger seated cherub Maxime for a layered vignette, or styled on his own beside a candle, a stack of old books, or a posy of dried stems. He suits a bedside table, a styled shelf, a mantel corner, or a quiet spot on a bedroom dresser.
Why we love it
- ◆ Relaxed, tilted-head pose, legs stretched out and head turned skyward for a quietly playful read rather than ornamental
- ◆ Distressed whitewash on magnesium oxide, chipped highlights along the wings and curls that read as genuinely aged stone
- ◆ Designed as a pair, set Bastien alongside Maxime for a contemplative vignette, or style him on his own as a small focal point
- ◆ Quietly giftable, suits christenings, milestone birthdays, housewarmings, or as a small memorial keepsake

How to style it
Bastien suits a quiet, layered setting. A few ideas:
- Set him on a stack of two or three old books, with a brass or wooden candle holder nearby. Browse our candle holders
- Pair Bastien with the larger Maxime cherub for a contemplative vignette on a console or mantel
- Style him alongside other small decorative sculptures and a soft linen runner
- Use him as a quiet focal point on a bedside table beside a small bud vase and a stem of dried lavender
Stylist's Tip Because Bastien is smaller, he works best with a deliberate height shift around him. Set him on a stack of old books or a small riser so his head meets the eye-line of a taller piece nearby, and the vignette reads as composed rather than scattered.
Care & Keeping
Dust gently with a soft dry cloth or a soft-bristle brush for the textured detail in the wings and hair. Magnesium oxide is porous, so avoid wet cleaning, harsh chemicals, and prolonged damp. Indoor or covered outdoor use only.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Bastien sit outside?
He's best as an indoor piece, or on a fully covered verandah or sheltered patio. Magnesium oxide doesn't love rain, frost, or strong direct sun, so full outdoor exposure will dull the finish quickly.
What style of decor does he suit?
French Provincial, French country, English cottage, romantic, and shabby chic interiors. He also works in eclectic or modern-vintage spaces where a single soft, sculptural piece is doing the heavy lifting.
How big is he?
17 cm tall, 13 cm wide, 11 cm deep. He sits comfortably in the palm of your hand, and reads as a small accent rather than a feature piece. For a larger companion, look at Maxime, who is taller and broader.
Will every cherub look exactly like the photos?
Bastien is hand-finished, so the chip pattern, paint distribution, and sandy undertones vary slightly from piece to piece. That's part of the appeal and the reason he reads as aged rather than mass-produced.
Does he make a good gift?
Yes. At under $40, Bastien is a thoughtful piece for christenings, milestone birthdays, housewarmings, or as a small memorial keepsake. The scale also suits gift-giving and photographs beautifully wrapped in linen or tissue.
Because Bastien is hand-finished, slight variations in patina, texture, and grain are natural and add to the unique character of each piece. Colour may also vary slightly between screens, all photography is taken in natural light.
