On The Water
A cockerel down on his front at the edge of the shelf, head out over the drop, tail up like a fountain behind him.
Monsieur Panache is a rooster cast in solid iron and finished in a natural rust patina. He is a ledge sitter: the body is long, low and flat underneath so it straddles an edge, and the head and comb reach out past the lip into open air. A sharp serrated comb stands proud of his head, two wattles hang under the beak, and behind him a great arched fan of sickle feathers sweeps up and back, the tallest part of him. He weighs 2.2 kg, which is the difference between cast iron and the resin birds that copy this shape.
At 21.5cm from beak to tail and 18.5cm to the top of that tail, he is wider than he is tall and light enough to move about with one hand. Built for outdoor life, and the rust patina is a finish rather than a fault, so weather deepens him instead of wearing him out.

How to style it
He is made for an edge, so give him one. Sitting him in the middle of a table wastes him.
- Perch him on the front edge of a dresser shelf or a bookcase, head out over the room
- Sit him on the end of a mantel so he looks down over the fire
- Set him on a kitchen windowsill facing in, or on the top of a low garden wall by the door
- Rest him on the wide rim of a big planter with his head over the planting
- Pair him with Chancellor Percival at 42cm, the standing rooster of the range
- Group him with the rest of our garden sculptures
Stylist's TipPut him above eye level. A ledge sitter only works if you are looking up at him, and a rooster leaning out over the edge of a high shelf gets noticed by everyone who walks in. At knee height he is just a bird on a plank.
Care & Keeping
Wipe with a soft dry cloth to lift dust out from between the tail feathers and around the comb. The rust patina is a finished surface and needs no sealing. On a painted shelf or pale stone, set a felt pad under him so the iron does not mark the surface, and keep harsh chemical cleaners and abrasive pads away from him.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does he sit on a shelf without falling off?
His underside is long and flat, and the weight sits back through the body and the tail rather than out in the head. Set him so about two thirds of his length is on the shelf and only the head reaches past the edge, and he stays put. He wants a shelf at least 10cm deep.
Does he have to go on an edge?
No, he sits perfectly well flat on a table or a bench. But the casting was designed to overhang, and on an edge with his head out in space he is a far better piece.
Can he live outside all year?
Yes. Iron with a natural rust patina is made for open weather, and rain deepens the colour rather than harming it. On pale stone or decking, set a pad underneath so run off does not mark the surface.
What is he made of?
Solid cast iron throughout, finished by hand in a natural rust patina. At 2.2 kg he is many times the weight of the resin birds sold at this size.
How big is he?
21.5cm from beak to tail, 10cm across and 18.5cm to the top of the tail, at 2.2 kg net. He is wider than he is tall. The second photo shows him beside a 30cm wine bottle to scale.
Will mine look exactly like the photos?
Close. The patina is applied by hand, so the depth and spread of the rust varies from piece to piece, and no two come out quite the same.
